About

Henry Coba is a trombonist, keyboardist, composer, arranger, writer, producer, educator, farmer, and yoga teacher based in Seattle, Washington. He recently earned an M.M. in Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, where he studied with Steve Owen, Paul Krueger, Idit Shner, and Ken Mastrogiovanni. As a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the university, he led the Latin Jazz Ensemble, assisted with administrative tasks, and occasionally directed large ensembles.

Henry has a wide range of experience as a performer. He plays trombone with Orquesta Cambalache, an active Salsa band based in Seattle, Washington. As a horn player, he also contributes to the music of Seattle-based groups Eléré and Nueva Era. He enjoys gigging with his own small groups and producing original music.

In May 2019, Henry attended Willamette University and received his B.A. in music while studying under Professors James Miley, Mike Nord, and Carson Keeble. During his time as an undergraduate, he had the opportunity to study for a semester at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, where he participated in salsa, funk, and jazz big band ensembles as a trombonist. He teaches in Spanish and English and believes that language and culture deeply inform our understanding of music.

Henry maintains an active private teaching studio. He loves to share his passion for performance, technique, jazz, free improvisation, composition, and music production with his students. He believes his role as a teacher is to help students find their own voice through music. In his spare time, Henry enjoys yoga, cycling, backpacking, making sourdough bread, gardening, and reading.
